Q. As a newcomer on the island, what do I miss most about leaving England?

A. Apart from my family and friends, it has to be the English Premier League!

My name is Nikeeta and I have recently joined Baraud to head up the legal team. I have been on island five weeks and loving the friendly, sunshine lifestyle. Someone recently asked me what I am missing most, and apart from the horrendous weather, long commute and London stress (!), it has to be English football.

I have been a Liverpool FC fan since I was born. It was always meant to be as my dad is a massive supporter and saw The Reds win the European Cup (now Champions League) in 1977 in Rome. When I am in England I travel to Anfield regularly and my favourite place has to be on the famous Kop.

With the World Cup fast approaching this summer, every footballer around the globe is trying their upmost to make it to Brazil. This, coupled with the climax of the national leagues makes it an extra exciting time to be a footy (or for you Americans and Canadians; “Soccer”) fan.

Liverpool are currently top of the table and must win all of their remaining five games to win the league. Chelsea are right behind us, and we still have them to play at Anfield. The biggest threat to Liverpool is Manchester City; they have more games to play than the top three. This Sunday is a huge game with Liverpool playing Man City at Anfield. The Kopites will be roaring. All Reds will also be praying that our fellow Merseysider’s, Everton, could turn Man City over and help us on the way to glory!

For all non-Manchester United and Arsenal supporters it was been a refreshing and electrifying season. Spain, Germany, France and Italy may still claim that they have the best footballers and the best leagues. However, I am sure the neutrals and English fans would disagree.

If Liverpool win the league it will be the first time since 1990. It is a long time coming and would be a fitting way to remember the 96 Liverpool fans killed at the Hillsborough tragedy 25 years ago. I also have a few bets in place, so fingers crossed!

Whichever team finishes top, it is going to be an unbelievable finale. Following that, next stop Brazil. Samba time!

My colleague Kathleen Williams plays football for Sunset FC on island and they just have just won their league! Congratulations to Kathleen and the team and good luck on adding the cups and making it a treble.
