Stressing the Importance of Balance…

To conclude Baraud’s highly informative and, at points, stirring tetralogy on healthy living I will be looking past aesthetics and athletics to explore emotion health. In an increasingly highly pressurized, ultra connected environment with 24 hour bombardment from work emails, texts, facebook updates, tweets and everything it’s easy for people to feel like it’s all a little overwhelming. Factors like this have lead to an increasing prevalence of stress in the work place, and there are many things we can all do help to improve this issue.

As a northern man emotional wellbeing was not something to be taken too seriously. Stress was something to be stuffed deep down behind your hairy chest and the closest thing to therapy was stoically consuming 10 pints of warm beer in the pub with your mates. Unfortunately, heavy drinking seems to be frowned upon in most modern work environments and so new techniques have had to evolve to combat this contemporary affliction.

Last week we attended an excellent wellness seminar at the Cayman Conference Center hosted by the Cayman wellness centre (www.wellnesscentre.ky) and an associate from the Cayman Heart Foundation. After outlining the many negative effects of stress they gave some excellent tips on how to fight it, and here are few you can try yourself.

Be active

If you have a stress-related problem physical activity can get you in the right state of mind to be able to identify the causes of stress and find a solution. To deal with stress effectively, you need to feel robust and you need to feel strong mentally. Exercise does will help you achieve that.

Work smarter, not harder.

Good time management means quality work, rather than quantity. Our long-hours culture is a well-known cause of workplace illness. Striking a healthy work/life balance is imperative. Working smarter means; prioritizing your work, concentrating on the tasks that will make a real difference to your output.

Drink more Orange juice

Researchers at the University of Alabama fed rats 200 milligrams of vitamin C twice a day and found that it nearly stopped the secretion of stress hormones. If it relaxes a rat, why not you? Two 8-ounce glasses of orange juice daily gives you the vitamin C you need.

Spend quality time with a canine

According to research at the State University of New York at Buffalo, being around a pet provides more stress relief than being around a human companion. The humane society are always looking for volunteers so sign up and help your community whilst also busting stress.


They say that laughter is the best medicine, and it’s really true. Laughing out loud increases oxygen and blood flow which automatically reduces stress. Not taking life too seriously can help everyone live a better and easier life.

Try to see the positive side

If you missed a deadline, try to appreciate what you learned from this mistake: now you know how to plan ahead. Things might seem bad, but if you try, there is usually something positive to be learned.
