Work Permits

A Work Permit allows one person to live and work in the Cayman Islands for a specified period of time.  There are two Boards that currently deal with work permit applications:

The Work Permit Board – deals with applications from businesses employing less than 15 people on a work permit
The Business Staffing Plan Board – deals with businesses employing more than 15 people on a work permit

In order to obtain a work permit in the Cayman Islands, a person must first secure employment in an existing company.  Following that, the prospective employee and the employer must fill out the relevant paperwork and submit these along with the appropriate fees to the relevant Board.  Any Caymanians interested in a specific role will be given priority.  Work permit fees are solely the responsibility of the employer and the work permit belongs to that employer only – a worker may not be employed in any capacity by another employer while on this permit (exception – see Shared Work Permits below) and must fulfill the occupation specified on the permit application.  Should the work permit expire, be revoked or if the employment is terminated for some reason, the employee must cease to be employed on the Island.
